From Skills to Self-Reliance in Kalmunai
Rising Hands, an organisation operating in the Kalmunai region of Sri Lanka, supports more than 40 students with special needs through various developmental activities aimed at enhancing their skills and improving their quality of life.
As part of its commitment to inclusive development and sustainable livelihoods, the Vivekananda Community Foundation (VCF), with the generous sponsorship of Mr. Ragupathy Nadarajah, who resides in Australia, has been providing teacher allowances for a six-month training programme in coconut shell craft production for these students.

The training programme was designed to help participants develop practical handicraft skills and explore opportunities for self-employment and income generation. Following the successful completion of the programme, three trainees who expressed a strong interest in starting their own businesses were interviewed to assess their interest, skills, and readiness to pursue self-employment.
This initiative represents an important step towards empowering students with special needs by recognising their abilities, strengthening their vocational skills, and creating pathways towards greater economic independence. Through education, skills development, and livelihood support, VCF continues to encourage inclusive and sustainable community development.
VCF extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Ragupathy Nadarajah for his valuable support in making this vocational training initiative possible.

To help these trainees transform their newly acquired skills into sustainable livelihood opportunities, VCF seeks the support of donors, philanthropists, charitable organisations, and well-wishers.
Essential assistance, including machinery, tools, production equipment, suitable workshop shelters, and other necessary facilities, would enable the trainees to establish and operate their own coconut shell craft businesses. Such support would help them turn their creativity and practical skills into income-generating opportunities and work towards greater financial independence.
VCF warmly invites individuals and organisations willing to support this initiative through financial contributions, machinery, equipment, or infrastructure assistance to join hands with the Foundation in creating a more inclusive and empowered future for these trainees.
Together, we can help transform skills into livelihoods and create meaningful opportunities for students with special needs to achieve greater independence and dignity.
